WHO ARE ART THERAPISTS?

"Art therapists are clinicians with master’s-level or higher degrees trained in art and therapy that serve diverse communities in different settings—from medical institutions and wellness centers, to schools and independent practices. Guided by ethical standards and scope of practice, their education and supervised training prepares them for culturally proficient work with diverse populations in a variety of settings. They are credentialed mental health care professionals who care deeply about the communities they support, helping to advance people’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being." - American Art Therapy Association. (n.d.). About art therapy. https://arttherapy.org/about-art-therapy/

WHAT IS AN ART THERAPY SESSION LIKE?

First, I want you to know there’s no right or wrong way to create art in art therapy. You have full permission to explore and embrace imperfections. Your art doesn’t need to be beautiful, precise, or even make sense to you right away—it’s all about the process, not perfection.

Some people may think art therapy is only for kids and artists. Actually, Art Therapy is for everyone! It’s a powerful tool to help achieve therapeutic goals, process trauma, gain insight, and express emotions when words fall short. Each session is tailored to your individual needs, whether you’re exploring a spiritually based approach or addressing challenges like anxiety and self-esteem. I can provide materials and techniques specifically chosen to support your growth and healing and guide you along the way.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCESS?

During the process of art making, I am sitting with you and simply holding space for observing. I will not change or judge your process, rather I will simple sit with you and be attuned to you. If asked, I can help when needed and assit to provide supplies. You are welcome to bring in your own supplies as well. In essence, my job is to create a sacred space for thoughts and feelings to unfold through the work. Once you feel your work is complete, we can explore the process and the meaning of chosen words, images or even scribbles and splatters you created. I will  share some of my observations with you and help guide you to explore whether they hold any value in gaining insight on the issues that brought you to therapy. You can either take your work home with you then or I will hold them for you and offer them to you at a later time.
